Veneers vs. Lumineers®
Salem, OR

Patient smiling after getting Lumineers® from Dr. Snyder at Fairmount Dental Center in Salem, ORDental veneers are a great tool for hiding imperfections in teeth; the downside is that it is necessary to cause permanent changes to the teeth to place them. Lumineers® can provide you the same great look with little to no damage. Our team at Fairmount Dental Center can help you have beautiful teeth, quickly and easily while strengthening your enamel by adding a thin layer of porcelain, not removing it.

How Dental Veneers Work

Dental veneers can make a significant difference in the look of your smile, but it is always preferred to keep the natural tooth intact whenever possible. The overall health of your teeth relies on the upkeep of teeth, tissue, and bone. The biggest downfall to dental veneers is the reduction of the tooth enamel to allow for placement.

The process of placing dental veneers begins with the reduction of the natural tooth. The amount reduced can vary but is generally about .5mm, or the thickness of a fingernail, this may sound small, but the enamel is 2.5mm, so if .5-1mm is removed that is notable, and your enamel will not grow back. Some patients report severe sensitivity following this reduction due to the underlayer of dentin being more exposed. Besides shaving the enamel layer to be thinner, more enamel may be removed to help the tooth appear straighter or even with the other teeth.

The Lumineer® Difference

Lumineers are similar to veneers, they are porcelain shells designed to cover up imperfections but with less prep work and less of the natural tooth being removed.

Sometimes referred to as no-prep veneers, Lumineers are ultra-thin, about .2 mm and provide the patient with a highly translucent covering for their teeth allowing them to appear very similar to the natural appearance of your enamel. Since we do not need to reduce the enamel, the dentin layer below should not cause a yellowish tint.

Lumineers are used to cosmetically enhance teeth, they can help teeth by:
•  Closing Gaps: We can place Lumineers that are slightly wider closing gaps.
•  Covering Chips: Teeth can become chipped through normal use, we can cover those chips and give you a perfect look.
•  Cover Stains: Whether you suffer from extrinsic stains or intrinsic stains, Lumineers can hide them, giving you a whiter smile.
•  Reshape Teeth: Whether your teeth are misshapen or uneven, we can give your teeth the appearance of perfect teeth.

There are many cosmetic dental procedures, some are temporary, and some are more permanent. Lumineers are a highly durable product; they are resistant to wear and resilient to chips and breakage when used correctly. You will need to follow care instructions for instance not biting on non-food items like fingernails, but you will be able to brush and floss them as you normally would your natural teeth. Many patients find that they can keep their Lumineers for over 20 years. We will check the bond of your Lumineers at each dental checkup and can make adjustments when needed.
