What Are Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are a plastic material usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth — the molars and premolars. This area of the teeth is rough and full of tiny grooves and pits that bacteria can easily inhabit. When these bacteria grow and multiply, they form plaque, leading to cavities. In fact, according to the ADA, aka American Dental Association, adults between the ages of 55 and 64 have an increased risk of cavities, and sealants can help protect their teeth. There are some situations in which sealants may not be appropriate or advisable. For example, people with prescriptions for retinoid drugs should avoid dental sealants, as these medications have been shown to weaken enamel and make them more vulnerable to damage. Similarly, people with oral sensitivities or allergies may experience severe reactions to the chemicals used in sealants, so they should consult their dentist before deciding on a treatment plan.
