When Should You Consider Going for Sealants?

Posted on 5/23/2022 by Fairmount Dental Center
When Should You Consider Going for Sealants?Dental sealants are an effective way to protect your teeth from cavities and are common in children. But, if you are at high risk for cavities, you should consider getting dental sealants. The procedure of applying sealant is quick and painless, and it can help protect your teeth for many years.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are a plastic material usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth — the molars and premolars. This area of the teeth is rough and full of tiny grooves and pits that bacteria can easily inhabit. When these bacteria grow and multiply, they form plaque, leading to cavities. Sealants act as a barrier, protecting the teeth from plaque and decay. Sealants protect these teeth from tooth decay by sealing deep grooves in the teeth that are hard to clean with a toothbrush.

Who Should Get Dental Sealants?

Dentists recommend that sealants be applied to the back teeth of children ages six to eleven, as this is the age group most likely to develop cavities. However, adults can also benefit from sealants, especially if they have deep grooves in their molars or a history of cavities. In fact, according to the ADA, aka American Dental Association, adults between the ages of 55 and 64 have an increased risk of cavities, and sealants can help protect their teeth. There are some situations in which sealants may not be appropriate or advisable. For example, people with prescriptions for retinoid drugs should avoid dental sealants, as these medications have been shown to weaken enamel and make them more vulnerable to damage. Similarly, people with oral sensitivities or allergies may experience severe reactions to the chemicals used in sealants, so they should consult their dentist before deciding on a treatment plan.

If you plan on getting dental sealants, give us a call and schedule an appointment with one of our dentists. We can help you decide if this is the proper treatment for you.
