Dental Hygiene Month Tips: 3 Everyday Habits to Improve Your Dental Health

Dental Hygiene Month Tips: 3 Everyday Habits to Improve Your Dental HealthProper dental hygiene is tremendously important to maintain good oral health and the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA) even goes further to support this oral practice by devoting the whole month of October as the National Dental Hygiene Month. While dentists and dental hygienists advocate and promote good oral habits year in year out, the month of October pushes this dental mantra further by educating patients about dental hygiene and how you can improve your own oral hygiene routines. Here are three everyday oral hygiene tips that can improve your dental health.

Brush Three Times a Day

Whenever you go to a dental office, the dentist will tell you that one of the things to do is brush thrice a day, especially after every meal. It will help prevent food from sticking between the teeth and gums. Regular brushing helps get rid of plaque and bacteria that are a culprit of bad breath, gum disease, cavities, tooth decay, and eventually loss of teeth. Make sure you use soft-bristled toothbrushes to prevent hard-scrubbing of the gums, which may cause other problems like receding gums and loss of enamel.

Floss Regularly

Flossing is very important for oral hygiene. It helps remove debris and food particles stuck between the teeth. These particles lodge in the spaces between the teeth during the day and if not removed, they can turn into plaque. Make sure you floss once a day at least, particularly before bedtime or after having your meal to help keep the gums healthy and do away with cavities.

Give Attention to the Tongue

Just like your gums and teeth, your tongue can house a variety of bacteria if you don't clean it. Kick these bacteria and the biofilm to the curb by using a tongue scraper to brush and clean the tongue. Brushing your tongue will eliminate bacteria and improve your breath. Along with regular dental visits for checkups and professional cleanings, using these tips will help promote your oral health.
