How can children prevent cavities?

Posted on 2/21/2022 by Fairmount Dental Center
How can children prevent cavities?A cavity is a hole formed in the teeth due to acidity that erodes the enamel. It usually forms in pockets that accumulate tartar and plaque, eroding the enamel resulting in a cavity. It is advisable to schedule regular appointments with a dentist, to get ahead of such situations before they get out of hand.

Dental care for babies

The gums should be cleaned with a gauze pad to remove the plaque before the teeth come in. It should be done after birth until the teeth come in.

As the child`s caregiver avoids having mouth contact with the kid as saliva contains bacteria that can be easily shared with the child, keep the mouth clean and healthy to minimize bacterial sharing, spoon-sharing with the child is not allowed.

For older babies, the diet should be healthy, nutritious, and contain less sugar. the food should be rich in calcium. The food should be nutritious and have a combination that reduces the risk of cavities after the diet introduces dairy products, which helps clear the plaque.

At the age of 12 months, bottle feeding with high sugar liquids may lead to cavities; a bottle full of plain water when the child is asleep. Have an open cup for a child to play with during the day.
Optimum levels of fluoride should be added to the water. The fluoride helps in strengthening the enamel preventing cavities. Avoid a lot of fluorides as they may stain teeth.

When a child sleeps with food in the mouth, the teeth are exposed to sugars, which may result in tooth cavities. Clean the teeth after every meal. The kid should visit the dentist so that if there is any mouth disease, it can be dealt with properly using specialized tools and equipment. Scheduling regular maintenance with a dental professional goes a long way in ensuring the condition doesn't develop, deteriorating your dental health.
