Pregnancy Dental Care Tips

Posted on 1/10/2022 by Fairmount Dental Center
Pregnancy Dental Care TipsPregnant women need to care for their teeth and gums. Pregnancy brings about hormonal changes that increase the risk of having gum disease. Gum disease can affect your oral and general health, as well as the health of the developing baby. Make a dental appointment prior to getting pregnant to have your teeth and gums professionally examined and cleaned. During a pre-pregnancy dental visit, any oral health concerns you have are treated in advance in preparation for your pregnancy. When you eventually become pregnant, use these tips to maintain your oral health.

Don't Skip Dental Visits

Pregnant women ignore dental visits fearing that their unborn baby could be put in danger. However, you should continue with your regular visits even after becoming pregnant, except for elective dental procedures.

Follow Good Oral Hygiene

You must observe proper oral hygiene while pregnant to prevent or reduce oral health problems. Brush twice a day. Also, floss one time a day. Use an antimicrobial mouth rinse to get rid of bacteria and food particles. If a professional dental cleaning is due, don't skip it because it is more important this time than ever.

Watch out for Gingivitis

You need to look out for signs of gum disease when pregnant, even if you are making your regular dental visits. In between the regular visits, a lot can happen in your mouth. Increased blood flow coupled with hormonal changes could result in pregnancy gingivitis, where bacteria attack your gums. The bacteria can potentially find their way into the bloodstream, jeopardizing your pregnancy. Look out for bad breath, redness and swelling, bleeding gums, sensitive gums, and loose teeth.

Ensuring good oral care during pregnancy is very important. If you have any concerns regarding your visits to the dentist while pregnant and how to deal with oral problems like gingivitis and periodontal disease, visit our dentist. We take your oral health, general health, and the health of the unborn baby seriously and offer much-needed help.
