Symptoms You May Notice if You Are Not Brushing Well Enough

Brushing your teeth seems like it should be pretty self-explanatory; however, there are a few ways to tell that you're actually doing it incorrectly or not good enough. Of course, there are the immediate signs which you can feel yourself after you brush—things like still feeling particles on your teeth, not flossing after brushing, not using mouthwash before you brush, bad breath, red and inflamed gums, or an increased insensitivity. But some indicators outside of yourself will indicate if you're not brushing well enough.
There seems to be a misconception about toothbrushes. It's generally assumed that a toothbrush is just a brush and that it is acceptable to keep it for years. This could not be more wrong. The bristles of your brush heavily impact the scouring ability of the tool. Thus, it should be replaced at least every six months, if not earlier. Further, using the correct bristle strength will change how your mouth and teeth feel after they've been used. Consider buying one with a soft or less bristle strength than what you currently have (since firm bristles can hurt your teeth and gums when used incorrectly).
To go along with your new brush, also consider how you are brushing. Most people have been taught to go from the top left to the top right, then the bottom left to the bottom right—similar to how we read. But this often means that the same teeth are being constantly missed. We suggest changing your brushing routine each time you brush. Using those 32 circles we learned as kids was great, but now that we're adults, there is more surface and more problems to clean. Also, make sure that you aren't brushing too hard, as this can cause abrasions in the surface of your teeth and cause a bad reaction from your gums.
