Have you ever wondered if you are having a dental emergency? Maybe your son or daughter just received head trauma while playing a contact sport. Perhaps your dental filling fell out of your tooth, or you bit down on the jaw breaker and you can feel part of your tooth floating around in your mouth. Regardless of the situation, it is a good skill to be able to assess an accident and decide if it is a dental emergency or not.
This is a Dental Emergency
A dental emergency can be a life-threatening situation or one that needs immediate treatment. If you have severe pain in your mouth, that will qualify as a dental emergency. If you have an infection in your mouth or knots on your gums, that can be potentially life threatening. Don't wait to call, contact us right away. If you are bleeding from your mouth and you cannot get it to stop, you have a dental emergency, and it is important to call us. Lastly, if you knocked out a tooth, you have a dental emergency.
This is Not a Dental Emergency
If you have a cracked or chipped tooth, you do not have a dental emergency. It is still important to call for an appointment though. A toothache would be in the same category. If you do not have swelling, a high fever, or bumps on your gums, your toothache is not a dental emergency. Lastly, if you have lost a dental filling or a crown, you can usually wait until we can see you in the office. We will try our best to get you in very soon!
