There is a lot of talk about foods and bacteria that lead to dental issues, but there are foods and nutrients that help keep the mouth and teeth healthy. Dietary fiber is great nutrient provider for your mouth as well as your body. In fact, fiber provides a benefit to almost every system in the body. Most know fiber to be beneficial in digestion, but fiber can also be great for oral hygiene. Maintaining and high fiber diet can be helpful in preventing dental ailments and keeping a healthy, bright smile.
Types of Fiber
There are two different types of fiber, both of which have different benefits for the mouth and body. Soluble fiber is the fiber that breaks down in water, and can help with weight loss and regulate blood sugar. The other type of fiber is insoluble fiber. This type of fiber does not break down in water but clumps together and pushes out food and waste. It is not just the nutrients that are helpful to your body, but the act of eating may have added benefits.
Fiber for Oral Health
Foods high in dietary fiber can be helpful in preventing dental issues such as tooth decay and gum disease. High fiber foods typically require a healthy amount of chewing, which is extremely beneficial for oral health. Chewing promotes saliva production, which is known to fight bacteria that causes many dental issues. Saliva also helps teeth stay clean, and keeps food particles from getting stuck.
There are many ways that fiber is beneficial for our bodies. Fiber can only benefit our teeth if it is chewed. While fiber supplements still have an impact on our overall health, they will not have the same benefits for the mouth and teeth. If you have more questions about how fiber can help you, or other dental health recommendations, please call our office. We are happy to help.
