Dental Tourism is Not Safe – Here's Why

Posted on 6/10/2019 by Fairmount Dental Center
Dental Tourism is Not Safe – Here's Why Many people have asked us about dental tourism. Have you heard of it? Dental tourism is a type of vacation where you would go to another country in order to have dental work done.

If you live near the borders of another country, or you are traveling to another country for vacation, it can be a tempting alternative, because in many cases, the price for dental work in other countries is much cheaper. However, this cheap idea is not a safe alternative for you or your family. Keep reading to find out why.

Why Dental Tourism is Risky

First, dental care in the United States is strictly regulated by the American Dental Association. That means that each dental office meets the requirements for safety, cleanliness, and certification of staff. It also means that your dental office medications are approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Many countries with cheap dental care have no such guarantees for cleanliness or safety.

You also need to think about the countries you are traveling too, especially if you plan to have serious dental work done. Your open wounds might leave you open to germs and bacteria that your body has not seen before, which is not a good thing if you are abroad. Also, if something happens to you during the recovery period, and you have to be hospitalized for a complication, you will be going into a medical care system that is not as good as the United States, and that you have no insurance for. In some cases, countries will expect you to pay up front for recovery care.

While your dental records are here and can be accessed quite easily all over the United States, the same cannot be said for a foreign country. That means that you will be having dental work done without a provider's knowledge of your past history of dental issues and work done.

If you have more questions about dental tourism, why not give us a call? We would love to talk to you about anything regarding your oral health.
