Top 3 Reasons We Must Use Suction to Perform Work on Your Teeth

Top 3 Reasons We Must Use Suction to Perform Work on Your TeethYou're at the dentist and your mouth is numbed up and suddenly your dentist brings a low-powered vacuum straw up to your mouth and tells you to close your mouth.

Suddenly, your mouth is no longer filled to the brim with a concoction of salvia, debris, and blood. But have you ever wondered what that little vacuum cleaner is called, and why your dentist uses one? The answer just might surprise you!

Benefits of Using a Saliva Ejector

The little tool your dentist brought up to your mouth is a handy little device called a "saliva ejector." Resembling a long-handled drinking straw in a way, it consists of a disposable tip (which is quite sanitary!) and a long suction tube.

While not all dentists advise closing your mouth around them, research shows that it's quite safe and effective at removing all the fluid and debris in your mouth.

But why is your dentist using one of those?

•  It's there for your comfort. Nobody likes feeling like they're drowning in a pool of their own saliva. A saliva ejector is a safe and reliable way to quickly clear your mouth so you're not feeling uncomfortable during your dental procedure.
•  It allows us to see better into your mouth. Not only is it uncomfortable for you to have saliva in your mouth, but if you accumulate too much, we can't see what we're doing. The saliva ejector helps us help you better!
•  It keeps the tooth clean and dry. Some procedures require the surface that we're working on to remain clean and dry. This is where the saliva ejector comes in. It helps pull away any debris that may accumulate while we work (such as filling material) and removes blood and other liquids surrounding your tooth.
