Do White Beverages Stain Your Teeth?

Posted on 11/20/2018 by Fairmount Dental Center
Do White Beverages Stain Your Teeth? When considering the color of your teeth, it is important to remember that what you eat and drink can cause stains. For the most part, it is dark-colored beverages like coffee and red wine that has the worst effect on the teeth. These dark-colored drinks include tannins that leave yellow or brown stains on the enamel. Light-colored drinks are better options for the teeth, but they aren't all completely safe.

Milk is Good for the Teeth

The most common white beverage is milk, and this nutritious drink offers many great benefits for the teeth. Not only is milk high in calcium, which maintains strong teeth and bones, but it is also high in protein.

Milk is good for the teeth on its own, but it can also be added to coffee in order to minimize staining. Adding milk to the coffee lightens the overall color of the drink and it provides the teeth with protection from the staining acids in coffee. Milk binds to the polyphenols in coffee, so instead of sticking to and staining the teeth, they move into the stomach where they are broken down.

White Wine Connected to Tooth Discoloration

For years, red wine has been connected to tooth discoloration, but new studies have shown that white wine can also lead to stains. The problem with this drink isn't due to the color of the liquid; rather, the high acidity is what poses an issue to the teeth.

Not only can white wine stain the teeth, but it also causes tooth erosion. White wine is acidic, and this acid eats away at the enamel, creating groves and rough spots. These holes are then prone to stains from other foods and drink.

Regular dental cleanings are one of the best ways to keep your teeth healthy and free of stains. Give us a call today to set up your next appointment.
