Do Premolars Need Special Care?

Posted on 11/10/2018 by Fairmount Dental Center
Do Premolars Need Special Care? The teeth that come in right behind your canines, but in front of your molars in the back, are called your premolars. We also refer to them as your bicuspids. These teeth are very important in the scheme of your mouth. They help break down the food you eat so that your molars can finish that job.

They also help to hold your bite in place because of their location. Do they need any extra care to remain strong and stable for your entire life? The answer is a little yes and a little no.

How to Care for Your Premolars

All of your teeth need special care to remain strong and stable for as long as possible. The premolars are no exception to this rule. You need to make sure when you brush, you clean out all of the grooves on the chewing surfaces of these teeth since their job is to do the initial breakdown of food as it enters your mouth. You also need to make sure to carefully floss around each of these teeth.

Since they put so much pressure on the food you eat, foods can easily get slid between the teeth and stick around near the gum line. If you make sure to brush twice daily, floss at least once, and come see us every six months, your premolars should have no major issues remaining healthy for most, if not all, of your life.

Premolars are important teeth. They need you to focus on getting them really clean each time you brush. The cleaner they get, the less likely they are to face cavities and the less likely they are to struggle with gum problems. If you want to find out more about how to properly care for your teeth in general, or your premolars in specific, come in and see us. We would love to teach you all about them!
