Can Teeth Begin to Decay Before They Erupt?

A tooth eruption is not as bad as it sounds; it is definitely not a small volcano erupting and spewing out teeth in your kids' mouths! This is actually a natural process when your children are developing their teeth.

Basically, this is the time when your children are having their first teeth, where the tooth "erupts" from the gums. Most mothers would know this as "teething" and the baby or milk teeth showing up around 6 months old.

Permanent teeth usually start around 2 years of age. This is a very important period for the dental health of your children. What most do not know is that tooth decay can begin even before the teeth start to show up.

What Is Tooth Decay, What Causes It And What Can Be Done?

Tooth decay that is present in children is what we call as early childhood caries. Interestingly, this is a very common disease, with children having more tooth decay than having asthma. One reason for tooth decay in children that is actually sad to know about since it is so easy to prevent is poor eating habits.

For instance, leaving your baby with a bottle in their mouths to help them sleep actually leaves it open to risk of bacteria and may be the reason why he or she has tooth decay even before the teeth show up. Another is the frequent exposure to sweet liquids. Exposing your child to such environments are harmful not only to their teeth but also to their health in general.

To prevent such things from happening, it is always better to clean your toddler's mouth with a clean gauze pad and to not allow them to suck on a baby bottle while sleeping.

If your child or a friend's children are having some problems with their dental health, please find a dentist as soon as possible. You can schedule an appointment with us and you can be rest assured that your children will get the great service that they deserve.
