What You Need to Do if You Wind Up with a Broken Dental Crown

When a dental crown breaks, it can make your heart race with worry. What if the nerve is exposed, or something gets in there? Thankfully, most dental offices have emergency appointments where they can get a dental crown back in place within about 24 hours, if not less.

However, until you can get into the dentist's chair, you have to keep that area clean and protected. Here are a few tips to help.

Protecting the Crown and the Tooth It Came Off Of

After you call your dentist and explain the situation, getting their first available appointment, you should follow these steps. First, if you were eating, it is important that you clean out your mouth.

Ideally, you want to brush the area gently, rinse with mouthwash, and keep it clean. Second, if you have some, place some dental wax into the recess of the tooth to keep it protected and keep debris out. If you don't have any on hand, go out and get some as soon as possible.

Third, you want to make sure you eat soft foods that aren't tacky. You don't want anything sharp hitting the inside of that exposed tooth for the time being. To that end, make sure you don't eat or drink anything overly cold or hot during this time, as that tooth may be overly sensitive.

Once you can, get in to see your dentist and have your crown replaced. If they need to send out for another new crown, then allow them to place a temporary crown while you wait. That way, you can eat foods nearly like normal, and you can bypass the worry that comes with a sensitive tooth being exposed. To find out what else to do if your crown breaks, call your dentist right away.
