Are Electric Flossers Really Better?

Posted on 5/15/2017 by Fairmount Dental Center
A man flossing his teeth happily.Flossing is an important part of your daily oral hygiene routine. Traditionally, flossing involved taking 18 inches of string, wrapping them around your fingers to produce a one to two-inch section and go space by space, altering the floss a little between each tooth to provide a clean section.

These days, however, flossing has gone electronic. But is an electronic flosser really better than tried and true string floss?

What is an Electric Flosser?

An electronic flosser, often referred to a water flosser or waterpik, is an electronic device that shoots a high-pressured stream of water. The goal of an electronic flosser is to use the water in place of floss; to remove food particles, plaque and bacteria from in between your teeth.

Benefits of Electric Flosser

An electric flosser does have several benefits associated with it:

•  Easier to use.
•  Gets the job done faster.
•  Can help if you have issues maneuvering around in your mouth.
•  Often preferred by those who don't like to floss.

Benefits of String Floss

Of course, plain old string floss, which has been used for decades, has multiple proven benefits as well:

•  Scaping motion is more effective at removing plaque, which helps to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
•  Less expensive (many electric flossers can go well above $50).
•  Takes up less space (and easily transported).

Who Might Benefit from an Electronic Flosser?

Certain people may benefit more than others by investing in an electric flosser:

•  Those with braces. Electric flossers can blast easily between wires and against brackets, reaching places that are difficult for floss to reach.
•  Those with sensitive gums. Electric flossers are gentler on gum tissue.
•  Those with dexterity issues. For those who have difficulty maneuvering their hands, an electric flosser does not require much movement.

The jury is still out on whether or not electronic flossers can be used as a replacement for traditional string floss. For right now, most dentists still lean toward string. If you are interested in an electronic flosser, though, be sure to discuss the pros and cons by contact our office today.
