What to Do When Your Wisdom Teeth Swell

Posted on 10/25/2016 by Fairmount Dental Center
A woman suffering from severe wisdom tooth pain.Wisdom teeth come in at the most inopportune time possible for most people, and the pain and swelling associated with it can be difficult to manage.

The swelling can be painful, and can get worse with eating. If you are struggling with your wisdom teeth coming in, then here are a few things that you can do to keep the pain, and the swelling, to a minimum.

Reducing the Swelling of Emerging Wisdom Teeth

Rinsing out your mouth is the best way to start trying to stop any type of pain from your wisdom teeth. You may be experiencing both pain and swelling from food being lodged in or around the emerging teeth.

If you can rinse the pieces of food away, then you can quickly and easily reduce the pain and the swelling around the tooth and begin to feel better.

If food is not the issue, then you should try and gargle with a little bit of warm salt water. This will help take down the swelling, and allow your mouth to feel a bit better.

Sucking on ice or ice chips can also help your swelling go down. If your teeth are too sore, you can also try an ice pack on your cheek. The cold helps to reduce the swelling, and should also help to decrease the amount of pain that you are in.

The last option is taking a pain reliever that you can buy over the counter. This should only be done when you know that the pain from your wisdom teeth is coming just from them emerging, and has no other cause.

If you are not sure, then contact our office and find out if you need to set up an appointment to have your wisdom teeth extracted to alleviate the pain.
