Why Your Teeth Need So Much Saliva

Posted on 9/25/2016 by Fairmount Dental Center
A man's tongue coated in saliva. Some people have a lot of excess saliva in their mouths, and it can become a pain. However, those people are far more likely to have a healthy mouth than those of us who have either just enough or too little saliva in our mouths.

There are some great benefits of saliva, and the more of it we have, the healthier our teeth will likely remain.

What Benefits Your Teeth Get from All That Saliva

First of all, your teeth are constantly being rinsed off from everything you ate and drank. If you are not able to brush the moment you have finished eating or drinking something, it is okay. Your saliva is helping to protect your teeth until you can.

Second, your teeth love the saliva bath they get because saliva is full of calcium. The calcium helps to keep your teeth strong and fills in any small gaps that it comes across in your mouth to help prevent decay and cavities.

Third, your saliva is a neutralizer. Some of the foods we eat and the drinks we consume are high in acid. The saliva we create allows those acids to be neutralized more quickly than if we did not have it, which can prevent our enamel from being eroded and keep our teeth stronger.

If you happen to suffer from dry-mouth, then call your dentist. He or she may be able to provide you with a few tips to help keep up the saliva production in your mouth.

If not, they may be able to help pinpoint what is going on that slowed your saliva production down in the first place. With so many positives that come with having enough saliva in your mouth, it is important that you make that call as soon as you are able.

Please contact us today if you have any questions about your oral health.
