What can I do to improve the health of my teeth and gums?

Posted on 7/15/2016 by Fairmount Dental Center
A woman brushing her teeth. We all want to have healthy teeth, no one wants the pain, the discomfort, or the expense of problems that can occur with our teeth. To maintain the health of your teeth, the same old lecture from mom holds true.

Brushing, flossing and regularly visiting your dentist is the best way to improve and maintain the health of your teeth. There are some tips that can assist.

Brushing Tips

Brushing your teeth should be part of your daily hygiene routine. To optimize your brushing, the following tips will help:

•  The ADA recommends brushing at least twice a day, when you rise from your bed and before you go to bed.
•  To reduce bacteria, it is best to store your toothbrush upright in the open, this will allow it to dry out. Do not store it in a drawer or with a cap, it will promote the growth of mold.
•  Some patients like pouring a little mouthwash on their toothbrush to kill bacteria, this is an option, though not necessary.
•  The ADA recommends changing your toothbrush every six months, this is due to both bacteria growth and because bristles become damaged over time.
•  When brushing, angle your toothbrush toward the gumline, you want to remove any plaque that is resting along the rim of your gums.
•  Brush for approximately two minutes, being sure to brush the front, back, and all around each tooth.

Flossing Tips

Flossing is important to the health of your gums and to remove any food particles that are in place. Flossing also removes decaying bacteria particles that can cause bad breath. To optimize your flossing, the following tips will be helpful:

•  When flossing, create a letter "C" with the floss. Use an angled motion with your floss opposed to a straight line that you move up and down. A letter "C" will help angle and lift any stuck food out of place.

Diligently taking these steps, along with regular dental cleanings and exams, will help you maintain a healthy smile. Please contact us if you have any questions about your oral health.
