Use These Tips to Have a Pain-Free Trip to the Dentist

Posted on 5/17/2016 by Fairmount Dental Center
An dentist consulting with his patient on her dental anxiety.Have you been dreading going to the dentist? Do you make any excuse that you can think of in order to put off your appointments? If so, you're not alone, as there are a lot of people out there who get anxiety when it comes to going to the dentist.

One reason that people are afraid to go to the dentist is that they are afraid that the experience might be painful. This is especially true for patients who haven't been to the dentist in a long time.

Fortunately, there are a few great strategies that you can use in order to make your visit pain free:

•  Talk to your dentist. Your dental staff wants to be your ally and to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure or exam. If you are nervous, simply talk to your dentist or hygienist. They will do what they can to ease your concerns and pain.
•  Don't pre-medicate. Some patients are so nervous about their appointments that they take their Valium or Xanax before they get to their dentist's office. Going into the dentist's office medicated isn't a good strategy, and you will be in much better hands if you simply explain your concerns to your dentist ahead of time rather than hoping to avoid discomfort on your own.
•  Ask about sedation dentistry. There have been many advances in the dentistry field that can help you to stay comfortable, such as sedation dentistry. Your dentist can help you to stay comfortable with laughing gas and other methods depending on the procedure and the severity of your anxiety.
•  Bring something that relaxes you. If you feel relaxed by listening to music, go ahead and bring in your iPod and a set of headphones to keep you calm and pain-free throughout your procedure.

If you are concerned about an upcoming trip to the dentist, be sure to call our office to discuss your apprehension.
