Not All Nightguards are the Same

Pair of clear mouth guards placed on a black background, commonly used for bruxism or teeth protection. Many people experience teeth grinding or clenching, especially while they sleep. This habit, known as bruxism, can lead to jaw pain, headaches, and damage to your teeth. A common solution to protect your teeth from the effects of bruxism is a nightguard. However, it's important to understand that not all nightguards are created equal. The type of nightguard you choose can significantly impact its effectiveness and comfort. Let's explore the different types available and what to consider when selecting one.

Over-the-Counter Nightguards

These nightguards are readily available at most drugstores and pharmacies. They are generally the least expensive option and come in two main varieties: boil-and-bite and pre-formed.

Boil-and-bite nightguards are made of a thermoplastic material that softens when heated in hot water. You then mold the softened guard to your teeth by biting down on it. While they offer a somewhat customized fit, the fit is often imprecise, and the material can be bulky and uncomfortable. They may not provide adequate protection for moderate to severe bruxism.

Pre-formed nightguards come in a universal size and shape. They are the least expensive option but offer the least customization and often fit poorly. They may not stay in place during sleep and can be uncomfortable.

Custom-Fitted Nightguards from Your Dentist

Custom nightguards are made specifically for your mouth by your dentist. This process involves taking an impression of your teeth, which is then used to create a model. The nightguard is then fabricated from this model using durable, high-quality materials.

These nightguards offer the best fit, comfort, and protection. Because they are custom-made, they are less likely to shift or fall out during sleep. Your dentist can also adjust the thickness and material of the nightguard to best suit your specific needs and the severity of your bruxism. Custom nightguards are typically more expensive than over-the-counter options, but the improved fit and protection make them a worthwhile investment for many people.

Types of Materials

Nightguards can be made from different materials, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

•  Soft Materials: These are typically more comfortable but may not be as durable for heavy grinders. They can also be prone to tearing or developing holes over time.
•  Hard Materials: These offer the best protection against grinding and clenching but may be less comfortable initially. They are more durable and last longer than soft materials.
•  Dual Laminate Materials: These combine a soft inner layer for comfort with a hard outer layer for durability. They offer a good balance of comfort and protection.

Choosing the Right Nightguard

The best type of nightguard for you depends on several factors, including the severity of your bruxism, your budget, and your personal preferences. It's always best to consult with your dentist to determine the most appropriate option for your individual needs. They can evaluate your teeth and jaw, assess the severity of your bruxism, and recommend the nightguard that will provide the best protection and comfort.

Investing in a nightguard is an investment in your oral health. By choosing the right nightguard, you can protect your teeth from the damaging effects of bruxism and enjoy a more comfortable and restful night's sleep.
