Managing the Blood from an Oral Injury

Posted on 3/15/2025 by Fairmount Dental Center
A female athlete putting on a sports guard before beginning her boxing training, in order to protect her teeth.Accidents happen, and sometimes they involve our mouths. Whether it's a sports injury, a fall, or biting down on something hard, an oral injury can be a scary experience. One of the first things you'll notice is the bleeding. While it might seem alarming, there are ways to manage the bleeding and keep yourself calm until you can get professional help.

First Things First: Stay Calm

It's natural to feel panicked when you see blood in your mouth. However, staying calm is essential. Take a deep breath and remember that most oral injuries are manageable with proper first aid.

Assess the Injury

Once you've calmed down, take a closer look at the injury. Is it a small cut, a graze, or a deeper wound? Is there a tooth involved? Assessing the severity of the injury will help you determine the next steps.

Stop the Bleeding

The most important thing at this point is to stop the bleeding. Here are some steps you can take:

•  Apply Direct Pressure: Use a clean cloth or gauze pad and apply firm pressure directly on the bleeding site for at least 10 minutes. Don't remove the cloth to check if the bleeding has stopped, as this can disrupt the clotting process.
•  Ice Pack: Wrap an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas in a towel and apply it to the injured area. This will help reduce swelling and pain and slow down the bleeding.
•  Elevate Your Head: Sit upright or lie down with your head elevated above your heart. This will help reduce blood flow to the injured area.

Seek Professional Help

If the bleeding doesn't stop after 15 minutes of applying direct pressure, or if the injury is severe, seek professional help immediately. This is especially important if there is a tooth involved, as it may require repair or extraction.

Prevention is Key

While accidents happen, there are ways to reduce the risk of oral injuries:

•  Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups can help keep your mouth healthy and strong.
•  Wear a Mouthguard: If you play sports, wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and soft tissues from impact.
•  Be Careful with Food: Cut up hard foods and avoid biting down on ice or other hard objects.

Conclusion

Oral injuries can be scary, but with proper first aid and prompt professional care, most can be managed effectively. By staying calm, taking the right steps, and practicing good prevention techniques, you can keep your smile healthy and strong.

Remember:

•  Stay calm and assess the injury.
•  Stop the bleeding using direct pressure, ice packs, and elevation.
•  Seek professional help if the bleeding doesn't stop or the injury is severe.
•  Practice good oral hygiene and wear a mouthguard to prevent injuries.

By following these tips, you can manage oral injuries effectively and maintain a healthy smile.
