Understanding the Hole in Your Gum After Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Posted on 9/16/2024 by Fairmount Dental Center
A process that is very normal for most individuals is the removal of their wisdom teeth. Mostly, it is done when one is in their late teens or early twenties. After the surgery, it might be frightening when you discover that one of your gums has a hole where the tooth used to be. But knowing about this hole, why and what it is, and how it heals will take some of the uneasiness away and help you manage recovery better.
What Is the Hole?
The hole in your gum that remains once a wisdom tooth has been removed is the space that was occupied by the tooth root. It may sometimes look deep, particularly if your wisdom tooth was impacted or the roots had long gone into the bone. This hole will initially be filled with a blood clot, which is important in healing.
Why Is It there?
The hole is normal following the removal of a tooth. It will take time for your body to regrow the bone and gum tissue to fill the void left by the extracted tooth. Bone restoration can take many weeks to several months, and your age, general health, and how you care for it may influence the course of this process.
Formation of the Blood Clot
A blood clot will form in the socket after an extraction. The clot is important as an underlying mechanism that protects the underlying bone and nerve endings. It is considered the base upon which new tissue growth will occur.
Granulation Tissue
Granulation tissue forms after some days. It is made up of connective tissues and the blood vessels. The tissue can cover the socket and protect it during healing.
Bone Formation
Weeks to several months after the surgery, your body will replace the bone in the socket with new bone. Finally, covered with gum tissue, the socket will feel like a normal part of your mouth again.
