Is Flouride Bad for You?

Posted on 6/3/2024 by Fairmount Dental Center
Close up of a beautiful smileThe subject of fluoride is one of the main ones in the conversation about dental health. Found in toothpaste, mouth rinses, and even in some of our drinking water, fluoride has been proven as a cavity fighter and, according to some experts, an absolute must for preserving healthy teeth. However, this widespread use has given birth to many myths about the safety and health effects of fluoride. So, let us review the facts and try to break any existing myths.

Fluoride: A Dental Hero?

Fluoride is a tremendous and well-renowned mineral that strengthens enamel and reduces the chances of one getting cavities. That is why this mineral has been added to dental care products and to the public water supply in a practice known as water fluoridation.

Addressing the Concerns

Some people say that an overdose of fluoride may cause harm despite this benefit. In general, excessive fluoride intake, particularly among small children during the pre-eruptive phase of tooth development, may cause dental fluorosis, a cosmetic effect on tooth enamel. However, it is important to note that dental fluorosis is typically mild and often unnoticeable.

The consensus from dental and medical experts is that when appropriately used, fluoride poses no danger; on the contrary, it has a favorable implication for dental health. Moderation is the essence of keeping a host of problems at bay. Otherwise, regulated use of fluoridated dental products and drinking fluoridated water in controlled amounts contribute significantly toward reducing cavities and maintaining good oral health.

Your Role in Dental Health

Although fluoride substantially affects dental health, it is not a sole hero. It is as essential as regular dental check-ups, good oral hygiene, and controlling your diet. If there is a concern about the amount, discuss it with your dentist. They will recommend certain things that can be done in such cases and other choices if necessary.

Always remember: It is all in your hands, and with the correct knowledge and practices, you will ensure your smile is healthy for years. Questions about fluoride? Questions on how to get sufficient fluoride? Call or talk to our dental professionals. Your smile is worth the effort!
