What Is the Difference Between Bridges and Dentures?

Why Do Adults Lose Teeth?

You may think that adults lose teeth because of trauma, but there are several reasons people lose their teeth in adulthood. Trauma is one reason. People who get hit in the face or are in a car accident can lose teeth, for example. However, the most common reason adults lose their teeth is due to gum disease or tooth decay, which are both caused by bacteria. Adults can also lose teeth due to medication. For example, if you are on corticosteroids for COPD or asthma, or if you are on antiepileptics because you have epilepsy, your medication could lead to bone loss and tooth loss.

The Benefits of Bridges

Bridges are a great way to restore your missing teeth. These restorative dental appliances use prosthetic teeth, usually made of porcelain to resemble natural teeth, with an acrylic, ceramic, or porcelain base. Traditional bridges can be wired in temporarily or cemented permanently in between two crowned teeth for strength or two dental implants. Bridges are great for dentists to use if you are missing more than one tooth along one side of your mouth. Dentists can also use bridges if you have one or more teeth missing on opposite sides of your jaw. Bridges can be used on any teeth, from the front teeth through the molars.

The Benefits of Dentures

Dentures are usually used to replace all of your teeth or all of the teeth on either your upper or lower jaw. They are made of porcelain or acrylic. While porcelain is better looking from an aesthetic point of view, it is not as strong as acrylic. Also, acrylic is lighter and more flexible than porcelain. Unlike bridges, dentures cannot be cemented in, and you have to remove them each evening to clean them.
