Adults figure that by the time they reach adulthood, the chances they will experience trauma to the mouth decrease. However, just because your chances of experiencing trauma are reduced does not mean it cannot happen, especially if you play sports.
If you have experienced trauma close to your mouth, you may be worried about your teeth and gums. When you get hit in the mouth, what are some warning signs for mouth trauma you should look for?
Pain and Blood
When you get hit by a ball during a basketball or baseball game, one of the warning signs you need to look out for is mouth pain and blood in your mouth. You may have a lot of blood in your mouth because there are a lot of blood vessels there, and they can bleed heavily. If the blood does not stop within a few minutes, especially if you applied ice to the area, you will need to visit an emergency dentist.
You may also experience a lot of pain because mouth injuries can be particularly painful. If your pain is severe, you may need to see a dentist immediately. After mouth trauma, you might also notice a lot of swelling as well.
Loose or Missing Teeth
Another sign of trauma to your mouth is teeth that are loosened or missing. If you have loosened teeth after trauma, do not do anything except apply ice and call your dentist. If you have missing teeth, look for the teeth and put them back in your mouth where they were originally from. Visit your dentist right away because the teeth can usually be reattached. However, if you wait longer than an hour, the chances your teeth will be successfully reattached will be reduced.
If you have experienced trauma to your mouth, what should you do? Your first step should be to go to your dentist to ensure that your teeth and gums are intact, and if they are not, your dentist will advise on the next steps.
