Is There Such A Thing As Eating Too Much Fruit?

Posted on 11/15/2023 by Fairmount Dental Center
Smiling boy with missing tooth, at Salem, OR.We don't blame you one bit for eating fruit because it is tasty, delicious, and full of great vitamins and minerals. However, if you eat too much fruit, it could have consequences for your dental health. Here's an explanation of why too much of a good thing may have long-term effects on your teeth.

Why Fruit Is Amazing-But Be Careful

Fruit contains a lot of vitamins and minerals that you need to be healthy, such as vitamins C and A, zinc, phosphorous, and potassium. However, fruit also has a lot of natural sugars, which is where the problem lies.

You have bacteria in your mouth all of the time. In normal amounts, these bacteria help you digest your food properly. However, these helpful bacteria can also become harmful if they are present in large quantities. Bacteria can cause tooth decay. If you have an excessive amount of bacteria in your mouth, the acids present in the bacteria can eat away at your tooth enamel and cause cavities. This same bacteria can also cause gum disease. If you don't take care of your mouth, gum disease can cause infections in other areas of your body, such as your heart.

Eat Fruit In Manageable Quantities

Most nutritionists recommend you eat a combination of five fruits and vegetables each day, but you can't take this advice to mean eat only five fruits and no veggies. Instead, most dieticians recommend three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit to keep you in optimum health. If you do eat a lot of fruit, be sure that you are brushing and flossing your teeth right after your fruit snack. Brushing and flossing regularly keeps bacteria down to a manageable level. The next time you are at the dentist, be sure and ask whether you are eating too much fruit to make sure you keep a healthy smile for life.
