How often should you go to the dentist?

Close-up of teeth and dental tools during an exam at Fairmount Dental CenterSome will opt to set reminders on their phones, others will automatically remember to visit their dentists regularly. All in the name of dental checkups, you might be wondering how often the visits should be. It is said that one hundred million Americans do not see their dentists every year. This is wrong since regular dental checkups are essential for maintaining oral health.

Typically, you are to see your dentist at least twice a year. This is according to an advertisement for toothpaste (little research supports this though). This rule is not necessarily the best option, to learn more about this, read on.

How often?

This is the big question. While it is true that visiting the dentist twice a year is good, the truth is that you have your unique smile needs. Therefore, it depends on your oral hygiene habits and your medical conditions.

Some may visit the dentist twice, others once others may need to go more often. However, this should be between you and your dentist. That means, during your dental visits, you should purpose to ask your doctor when your next dental check-up should be.

Who should see the dentist more often?

Not everyone needs to see the dentist more often. People with a higher risk of dental diseases and other underlying health conditions may need to see the dentist more regularly, say after every three months or more. This group of people includes pregnant women, frequent smokers, people with diabetes, people with gum issues, and people with weak immune systems.

Why is it important?

Even if you brush your teeth twice a day, you will still be required to see your dentist more often for check-ups. Some diseases like cavities and minor gum issues might not be visible or painful until they are in an advanced stage. Remember, the earlier you are diagnosed, the easier it is to treat it and the less complex the procedure might be. Book an appointment with us today!
