Are Grills Safe?

Posted on 9/11/2023 by Fairmount Dental Center
Are Grills Safe?Teeth are important in accentuating the smile. No wonder most people adorn their teeth with grills for beauty. However, the question is, how safe are dental grills in the long term?

Defining Grills

The popular name on the streets is 'grillz'. They are covers that go over one or more teeth. Most grills are made of precious metals such as gold or silver. They are encrusted with jewels to make them stand out more. However, you may find others made of base metals. Whereas grills communicate status, they may not be healthy for your teeth. Interestingly, most people confuse grills with crowns.

Debris Trap

If you are not keen on removing the grills, food debris could get stuck between the grill and the teeth. Over time, the debris will convert to plaque providing the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria is the leading cause of decay in teeth. Bacteria attack the enamel rendering it weak and susceptible to infections.

Abrasion

Grills are abrasive to some extent. That constant friction between the grill and the teeth causes unsteadiness to the teeth. The abrasion also scrapes away the enamel. The adhesive glue needed to bond the grill could irritate the teeth. This is due to the chemicals used most of which are harmful.

Discoloration

Grills cause teeth discoloration and this only adds to the cost of dental care. When you do decide that it is time to let go of dental grills, then the cost of teeth whitening comes in.

Tips And Tricks For Maintaining Oral Hygiene

Well, the best you can do is to remove the grill before eating. That way the chances of debris getting stuck are significantly reduced. Brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once is a routine you should not let go of. Before putting the grill back on, rinse it thoroughly to get rid of bacteria that could be lodged on the precious metals. Over and above, follow all the recommended practices the doctor will advise to guard against dental complications. At our facilities, we will walk you through all the dental care routine you need to stay healthy orally. Reach out to us today.
